Balayage in Queenstown: The Complete Guide
Everything you need to know about balayage in Queenstown — what it is, how it differs from foils, what to expect, and how to keep it looking fresh.
Balayage is one of the colour services we do most at Crew, and it's the one people spell a dozen different ways when they search for it. Whatever you typed, this is the guide: what balayage hair actually is, what it costs here, how the appointment runs and how to keep it looking fresh until your next visit.
Short answer: Balayage is colour painted on by hand so it's lighter through the lengths and grows out softly, without a hard root line. At Crew in Queenstown it's $325 the first time, $233 for maintenance under 16 weeks and $265 for a refresh after that, with toner priced separately. Most clients come back every three to four months. What is balayage hair?
Balayage is a freehand technique. Your colourist paints lightener onto the surface of sections of hair, rather than saturating each strand from root to tip. The word is French for "to sweep", which is pretty much the hand movement.
The result is a gradient. Your roots stay closer to your natural colour, and the light builds through the mid-lengths and ends, roughly where the sun would lighten you on its own. Because there's no solid line at the root, it grows out gently.
It isn't only for blondes. On brunettes we often paint in caramel, honey or toffee tones rather than a pale blonde, and on very dark hair we may build the lightness over two visits to keep the hair in good condition.
How much does balayage cost in Queenstown?
Here's our current balayage pricing. Balayage is one price across our stylists.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Balayage, first time | $325 |
| Balayage refresh, over 16 weeks since your last | $265 |
| Balayage maintenance, under 16 weeks since your last | $233 |
| Toner, short hair | $50 |
| Toner, medium hair | $66 |
| Toner, long hair | $75 |
Toners are listed separately on our price list. Most balayage is finished with one, because it's what turns raw lightened hair into the exact shade you asked for. We'll confirm your total at the consultation, before any colour goes on.
The first-time price is higher because there's more to do. We're placing the pattern from scratch, and often softening old colour or foil lines as we go. After that, you're maintaining work that's already there.
What happens at a balayage appointment?
It starts with a chat. We look at your natural base, any colour already in your hair (box dye from two years ago counts), how light you want to go and how often you can realistically get back in. Photos help, including a couple of looks you don't like.
Then your colourist sections and paints. Some pieces are left open to the air, some are wrapped in film or cotton to keep them separate, depending on how much lift we need. Once it's processed, you go to the basin for a rinse and toner, then a blow-dry so you can see the finished colour properly.
Allow two and a half to three and a half hours. Long, thick hair sits at the top of that range. Bring a coffee order and something to read.
How long does balayage last?
Most of our balayage clients come back every three to four months. That's why the pricing splits at 16 weeks. Come in before then and it's a maintenance appointment. Leave it longer and there's more growth to blend, so it's a refresh.
The lightness itself doesn't wash out, but the toner on top does. In Queenstown the sun at altitude, lake swims and hard water all speed that up, so some clients book a toner on its own about halfway between balayage appointments to bring the shade back.
If you're weighing up balayage against a full head of foils, we've written a separate comparison: balayage or foils, how to choose.
How do you look after balayage at home?
Lightened ends are more porous than the rest of your hair. They lose moisture faster and hold onto minerals, which is what makes blonde go warm and flat.
- Cool blonde balayage: wash with Kérastase Blond Absolu Bain Lumière ($57.12) most days, and swap in Blond Absolu Bain Ultra-Violet ($57.12) about once a week to knock back yellow.
- After every wash: a conditioner through the lengths. Blond Absolu Cicaflash ($70.56) is the one we reach for on lightened hair.
- Caramel or brunette balayage: Kérastase Chroma Absolu Bain Chroma Respect ($57.12) is made for colour-treated hair and skips the violet pigment you don't need.
- Before hot tools: always a heat protectant. Lightened ends scorch faster than you'd expect.
Go easy on purple shampoo. Once a week is plenty for most people, and using it every wash can leave pale balayage looking grey or lilac. Our Blond Absolu range has the full lineup if you want to build a routine.
Is balayage right for you?
Balayage suits you if you want colour that looks good for months, you'd rather not see a root line at six weeks, and you like a softer, lived-in finish. It's less suited to someone who wants bright, even blonde right up to the scalp, or full grey coverage. Foils or a global colour usually do those jobs better.

Frequently asked questions
Is it spelt balayage, balyage or bayalage?
It's balayage, said roughly bah-lee-ahzh. It's French, so people search for it every way imaginable, and we get balliage and beleage too. They all mean the same thing: lightener painted on by hand so the colour is softer and grows out without a hard line. Just ask for balayage when you book and we'll know.
Does balayage work on dark or black hair?
Yes. On darker bases we usually aim for a caramel or honey result rather than a pale blonde in one sitting, which keeps the hair in good condition. If you want to go much lighter, we may plan it over two visits. Your colourist will look at your hair at the consultation and tell you what's realistic.
What should I bring to a balayage appointment?
A few photos of colour you like, and a couple you don't. Tell us about any box dye, henna or previous colour, even from a year or two ago, because it changes how lightener behaves. Come with dry hair and allow a good chunk of the day, since balayage with toner and a blow-wave usually takes a few hours.
How long will my balayage last before I need it redone?
Most clients come back every three to four months for a full refresh, sometimes longer if they like it lived-in. A toner in between keeps the tone cool and shiny. The gap really depends on your base colour and how much contrast you've got, so we'll suggest a rebooking time at the end of your visit.
Where can I book balayage with Crew in Queenstown?
We're upstairs at Level 1, 22 The Mall in central Queenstown. You can book online any time or call 03 441 8555. If you're not sure balayage is right for you, start with a consultation. Our balayage page shows examples of our work.
Does balayage damage your hair?
Any lightener changes the hair, but balayage is usually gentler than all-over lightening because less of your hair is processed and the root area is mostly left alone. We also check the condition of your ends first and will hold back if they need some care before lightening. At home, a good conditioner and heat protectant make the most difference to how your ends hold up.
Can you do balayage on short hair?
Yes, as long as there's enough length to show a soft change from root to end. On a bob or a longer pixie we place it more finely and closer to the face. Very short crops usually suit a few fine foils or a gloss better. Bring a photo to your consultation and we'll tell you what will actually show.
