How to choose a blonde specialist in Queenstown

3 November 2026

Short answer: A good blonde specialist in Queenstown tones for your shade instead of using one formula, takes bond care seriously, will tell you if your blonde needs more than one visit, and judges the colour in daylight. At Crew, McKenzie Edgar (Master Stylist, Blonde Specialist) and Elmarie Strecker (foils and lived-in blondes) lead our blonde work. A colour consultation is free.

Updated November 2026. Service prices are from our live price list and are confirmed at your consultation.

Most blonde that goes wrong doesn't go wrong in the bleach bowl. It goes wrong at the toner, or because someone pushed hair further in one sitting than it could take. So when you're choosing who to trust with your blonde, ask about those parts first.

Here's what we'd look for in any colourist, and how we handle each one at Crew.

What makes a good blonde specialist?

They talk about toner before bleach

Lightener lifts. Toner decides the shade you walk out with, whether that's creamy, beige or icy, and it's where brass gets fixed. A good blonde specialist will ask what you dislike about your current blonde and explain how they'll tone it. At Crew, toners are priced by length and done as their own step, so we can mix for your shade rather than reach for a default.

They protect the hair while lifting

Lifting hair is a chemical process, so condition matters. Your colourist should check the condition of your hair before anything's mixed, and talk to you about a strengthening bond treatment where it's needed. We assess it first, and for balayage your stylist will tell you if you need a gloss, toner or bond treatment.

They're honest about staging

Going from dark or box-dyed hair to bright blonde isn't always a one-visit job. A good specialist tells you that up front, with a plan and a price for each step. Ours will tell you honestly if we need to lighten over more than one visit to keep your hair healthy.

They judge it in outdoor light

Queenstown light is bright and unforgiving. Blonde that looks perfect under salon lights can read warmer on the lake front. We tone for how your colour will look outdoors, not just in the salon.

Who does blonde at Crew?

McKenzie Edgar is our Master Stylist and Blonde Specialist, and leads our balayage and ombre work. Elmarie Strecker is a Senior Stylist whose focus is foils and lived-in blondes. Jess Boyd, a Senior Stylist, specialises in lived-in colour and blow-outs. You can read more about each on meet the team.

Which blonde to choose

If you want brightness right from the root: foils, from the half head at $150. Expect to retouch more often. Book with Elmarie or McKenzie through our foils and highlights page.

If you want soft grow-out and fewer visits: balayage. Balayage maintenance is priced for a visit inside 16 weeks, so three to four months is the usual rhythm.

If you want clean blonde all over: full head bleach on virgin hair at $202, then a bleach refresh on the roots at $152. See blondes at Crew.

For home care, two ways, choose by budget and how brassy you go. Kérastase Blond Absolu Bain Ultra-Violet ($57.12) is a purple shampoo to use once or twice a week, with Cicaflash ($70.56) as the conditioner. Or the Pureology pair: Strength Cure Blonde Purple Shampoo ($58.08) and Strength Cure Blonde Conditioner ($58.08), both sulfate-free. More in the best Kérastase for blonde hair and keeping blonde beautiful through a Queenstown year.

Frequently asked questions

How often do I need a toner?

Toner fades faster than lightener, so a refresh every few weeks keeps blonde cool and clean, depending on how often you wash and how much sun you get. A toner on its own is quick: $50 for short hair, $66 for medium and $75 for long, in 15 to 30 minutes. A purple shampoo once a week stretches the time between.

Can you fix blonde that's gone brassy somewhere else?

Usually, yes. Book a consultation first so we can see what's been done before and give you a realistic plan and price. Sometimes a toner fixes it. Sometimes it needs more work, and we'll say so. Our colour correction page explains how we quote.

Will lightening damage my hair?

Lightening is a chemical process, so it does change the hair. How much depends on the condition you start with and how far you go. We assess your hair first, talk to you about a bond treatment where it's needed, and will tell you honestly if we should lighten over more than one visit.

How long does a full head of foils take?

A full head retouch takes about 2 hours and a first-time full head about 2 hours 30, before toner. Toner adds 15 to 30 minutes depending on length. A half head retouch takes about an hour. Allow a bit more time on your first visit so there's room for the consultation.

Can I go from dark hair to blonde in one appointment?

Sometimes, but often not, especially over old box dye or several layers of colour. We'd rather get you there in stages and keep your hair in good condition than push it in one go. At your consultation we'll give you a plan and a price for each visit.

Is balayage or foils better for Queenstown sun?

Both work. Balayage grows out softly and needs fewer visits, which suits people outdoors a lot. Foils give brighter, more even lift from the root but show regrowth sooner. Either way, sun and lake water pull warmth into blonde, so a toner refresh and a purple shampoo matter more here.

Do I need a consultation before going blonde?

If you're new to Crew or changing your colour, yes. It's free and takes 15 minutes. We look at your hair in natural light, talk through your colour history and the blonde you want, and confirm the price before anything's mixed. You can book it online.
