Hairdresser Queenstown, Frankton or Arrowtown: how to choose

3 November 2026

Short answer: Choosing a hairdresser Queenstown locals stick with comes down to five things: a proper consultation, a clear price structure, the right specialist for your service, hours and parking that work for you, and easy online booking. Crew Stylists is in the Queenstown CBD, upstairs at Level 1, 22 The Mall, with a free 15-minute consultation and a late night until 8pm on Thursdays.

Updated November 2026. Service prices are from our live price list and are confirmed at your consultation.

Whether you live in town, out at Frankton or over in Arrowtown, there's no shortage of salons. Finding one you'll still be going to in two years takes a bit more checking. These are the things we'd check, whoever you book with, and how Crew measures up against each one.

One thing up front: we're in central Queenstown. We don't have a Frankton or Arrowtown salon.

How do I choose the best hairdresser in Queenstown?

A consultation before anything's cut or mixed

A good salon wants to see your hair before it commits to a price or a result, especially for colour. Ask whether they offer one and whether it costs anything. At Crew, colour, cut and extensions consultations are all free and take 15 minutes. We talk through what you want, look at your hair in natural light, and confirm the price before you book.

A price structure you can follow

Look for a published price list with clear levels, so you know why one appointment costs more than another. Our full menu is on our pricing page. Most of it is one price. On colour and blow-dries, booking with an Emerging Stylist costs less.

Specialists for the service you want

A salon that does everything should still be able to tell you who's strongest at what. Ours: Tina Fuller is our Creative Director. McKenzie Edgar is a Master Stylist and our Blonde Specialist. Jess Boyd is a Senior Stylist for lived-in colour and blow-outs. Elmarie Strecker is a Senior Stylist for foils and lived-in blondes. Natasha Ruiz does nails and manages the studio, and Mya McKee is our apprentice. See meet the team.

Hours and parking that fit your week

We're open Monday to Wednesday 9am to 5pm, Thursday 9am to 8pm and Friday 9am to 5pm, closed weekends and public holidays. If you work in Frankton or Arrowtown, the Thursday late night is the easy one: finish work, drive in, and you're in the chair by early evening.

Town parking is metered and limited, so allow a few extra minutes. The Boundary Street and Man Street car parks are the closest larger ones, and there's metered street parking around Ballarat and Camp Streets. Full directions are on find us, including the stairway entrance first-timers tend to walk past.

Booking that doesn't need a phone call

You should be able to see real availability and book in a minute. Our online booking shows live times across the team, any time of day.

Is there a hairdresser in Frankton or Arrowtown?

Yes, both have salons, and if you need to be in and out on a lunch break, one close to work may suit you best. If you're after a particular specialist, or the Thursday late night fits better, the drive into town is short. The questions above work wherever you book.

Popular services and prices compared

What to choose

If you're new and changing your colour: book the free colour consultation first, then the service.

If budget matters on colour or blow-dries: ask for an Emerging Stylist. A medium blow-dry is $70 instead of $75, and a scalp retouch is $90 instead of $107.

If you want blonde or balayage: ask for McKenzie or Elmarie.

If you can only come after work: book Thursday evening, and book ahead, because it fills first.

For home care, two ways, choose by budget. Kérastase is the range we reach for first: Genesis Bain Hydra-Fortifiant ($57.12) for hair prone to breakage, or Chronologiste Bain Régénérant ($66.36) as the more indulgent wash. Pureology is the sulfate-free option made for colour-treated hair, with Strength Cure Conditioner ($58.08) for hair that's been through a lot.

What it costs, how long it takes and how to book

Consultations are free and take 15 minutes. Cuts start at $107 for women and $77 for men, colour retouches from $90 with an Emerging Stylist, and balayage from $233. More about us on our Queenstown hair salon page.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Crew Stylists in Queenstown?

Upstairs at Level 1, 22 The Mall, in the Queenstown CBD. We're a first-floor salon, so look for the stairway entrance and head up. If you can't find the door, call us on 03 441 8555 and we'll point you to it. The closest larger car parks are Boundary Street and Man Street.

Do I need to book ahead?

We'd recommend it. Thursday late nights and the weeks around weddings and events fill fastest. Online booking shows live availability across the team, so you can see what's free in about a minute. Walk-ins are welcome when a chair is free, but booking is the surest way to get the time you want.

Is Crew open on weekends?

No. We're open Monday to Wednesday 9am to 5pm, Thursday 9am to 8pm and Friday 9am to 5pm, and closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. If you work weekdays, the Thursday late night is the one to aim for, and it's worth booking a week or two ahead.

What's the difference between a Senior and an Emerging Stylist?

Our Senior and Master Stylists are experienced across colour, cutting and styling, and charge the standard menu prices. Emerging Stylists are newly qualified and building their skills, supported by the senior team. On colour and blow-dries they cost less. The rest of the menu is one price.

Is it worth driving in from Frankton or Arrowtown for a haircut?

That's up to you. A salon near work is hard to beat for a quick trim. People drive in to us when they want a particular specialist, a colour they trust, or the Thursday late night. Plan a few minutes for parking in town, and book online so your time is held.

What services does Crew offer?

Balayage, blondes and lightening, foils and highlights, global and ammonia-free colour, cuts and blow-dries, treatments, Cezanne smoothing, perms, hair extensions, wedding and occasion hair, men's cuts in our Barber-zone, children's cuts and nails. Every price is on our price list.

How do I find a good hairdresser for curly hair in Queenstown?

Ask how they cut with your texture in mind. Curly hair falls, sits and springs back differently to straight hair, so the shape and where weight comes out should follow your curl pattern. Book a free cut and style consultation with us first, and read our curly hair page for how we approach curls.
