Ball hair has one job: look good in the photos at 7pm and still be there at midnight after a few hours of dancing. Most of what decides that happens before you sit down in the chair, so here's how to choose a style, prep your hair and book it without the last-minute scramble.

Ball hairstyles that actually last the night

Some styles hold better than others, whatever your hair type.

  • Low buns and chignons are the safest bet. The weight sits close to the head, pins have something to grip, and they survive a slow dance and a car ride.
  • Half-up, half-down is the most requested. The top section is secure and the lengths are curled. On fine or very straight hair the curls drop faster, so we set them firmly and finish with a stronger hairspray.
  • Braids, whether a crown braid, a braided bun or a braid through a ponytail, last really well and look good from every angle.
  • Sleek high ponytails are easy to wear and dance in, but take time to get properly smooth. They suit thick hair best.
  • Full hair down with curls is the hardest to make last, especially in a hot, crowded room. If that's your look, book a blow-dry and curls rather than curls on second-day hair.

Formal hairstyles: matching the hair to the dress

Bring a photo of the dress, or wear something with the same neckline. A high neck or halter usually looks best with hair up. Strapless and off-the-shoulder suit soft curls down or a low, loose bun. Busy backs or beading often look better with hair swept to one side so the detail shows.

Bring two or three photos of styles you like, and one you don't. The one you don't like often tells us more.

When should I book my ball hair?

As soon as you know the date. Ball nights tend to land on the same few weekends, and every school in the area wants the afternoon slots. Book online two to four weeks out, and longer if a group of friends want to go back to back.

One honest thing to plan around: the salon is open weekdays only, Monday to Friday, with Thursday running until 8pm. We're closed on weekends. If your ball is on a Friday, the afternoon works well. If it's on a Saturday, call us on 03 441 8555 before you plan around us so we can talk through what's possible.

How to prep your hair for a ball

  1. Get your cut or colour one to two weeks before, not the day before. The ends sit better, and if a toner comes out a bit strong, it settles.
  2. Wash your hair the day before, not the morning of. Squeaky-clean hair is slippery, and pins and curls hold better on day-old hair. If your roots go oily fast, a little dry shampoo the morning of helps. Kérastase Fresh Affair ($58.80) is what we use.
  3. Skip heavy oils and masks the day before. They make hair too soft to hold a style.
  4. Come with dry hair for an up-style unless you've booked a wash and blow-dry with it.
  5. Wear a button-up or zip top so you're not pulling anything over your finished hair.

Can I do my own ball hair at home?

A simple low bun or a sleek ponytail, yes, with practice. Do a full run-through a week before, with the same pins and spray you'll use on the night. Use a heat protector like Kérastase Genesis Défense Thermique ($70.56) before curling, let the curls cool in your hand before you let go, and pin before you spray, not after.

Anything with lots of sections or braiding is where people get stuck at 5pm with arms aching. That's when booking it in makes sense.

Which should you book?

Up-style, half-up or any formal look: special occasion hair, $125.

A braided style: the braid, $80.

Hair down with curls, clean hair: a wash and blow-dry plus the tong or curl add-on.

Hair already washed, just want curls: curls on dry hair, $56.

Nails too: our nail technician Natasha does gel polish ($60) and BIAB ($80) in the same salon, so you can book both on the same afternoon.

The guys: a high school cut a week before ($70 for a men's high school cut), and a men's blow-dry and styling on the day if they want it ($50).

Frequently asked questions

How much is formal hair in Queenstown?

At Crew, special occasion hair (up-styles, half-up and formal looks) is $125 and takes about an hour. A braid is $80, curls on dry hair are $56, and a wash and blow-dry is $63, $75 or $87 depending on length. Prices are confirmed when you're in the chair.

Which ball hairstyle lasts longest?

A low bun or chignon, or a braided style. The weight sits close to the head and the pins have something to grip, so they hold through dancing. Curls worn down are the hardest to keep, especially in a warm room, so they need a proper blow-dry first.

Should I wash my hair before ball hair?

Wash it the day before, not the morning of. Day-old hair holds pins and curls better than freshly washed hair, which can be slippery. Come with dry hair for an up-style unless you've booked a wash and blow-dry with it.

Do you do a trial for ball hair?

There's no separate ball trial on our menu. If you want to test a style, book special occasion hair or a braid a few weeks out and take photos. For weddings we do offer a dedicated hair trial; see our weddings page.

Can you do ball hair on a Saturday?

The salon is closed on weekends, Monday to Friday only with a Thursday late night until 8pm. If your ball is on a Saturday, call us on 03 441 8555 before you plan around us and we'll talk through what's possible.

Can my friends and I book together?

Yes. Call us so we can line your appointments up back to back with different stylists. Groups fill the afternoon fast in ball season, so get in early.

What should I bring to my ball hair appointment?

Photos of styles you like (and one you don't), a photo of your dress or its neckline, any hair accessories you're wearing, and your own pins if you want a specific colour. Wear a top that buttons or zips at the front.
