The Big Bouncy Blow Wave, and How to Make It Last
Salon-worthy volume and bounce, and the tricks to keep your blow wave going for days — even through a Queenstown wind.
There's a particular kind of confidence that comes with a proper blow wave — that soft, bouncy volume that swishes when you move. It's a favourite before a wedding, a night out, or honestly just a Friday. Here's how we get it, and how you can stretch it out at home.
Big bouncy hair starts before the dryer even comes out. The right shampoo and a volumising prep give the hair something to hold onto, and the way it's rough-dried and then set on a round brush is what builds that lift at the root and the smooth, rounded ends. Finishing on the cool setting locks the shape in, which is the bit most people skip at home.
Making it last past day one
The enemy of a good blow wave is moisture and over-touching. Keep your hands out of it, let it fully cool and set before you tie it up or head outside, and a light hairspray gives it staying power without going crunchy. Queenstown wind is real, so a little extra hold on a big day is worth it.
On day two, a few minutes with a curling iron or some heated rollers through the lengths revives the bounce. Dry shampoo at the roots soaks up any oil and brings the volume straight back, so you can often get three good days out of one blow wave with a tiny bit of effort.
If you've never had a professional one, it's a lovely treat and a great way to learn what your hair can do. Plenty of clients book one before an event and then get hooked on the feeling.
