Barber in Queenstown or a salon? Men's haircuts, prices and walk-ins

3 November 2026

Short answer: A barber in Queenstown is great for a quick clipper cut. A salon gives you more time for scissor work, grey blending and a proper consultation. At Crew we've got both in one place: our Barber-zone, a separate men's room inside the salon. A men's cut refresh is $77 (45 min), a restyle $107 and a clipper or buzz cut $32. Walk-ins are welcome when a chair's free.

Most guys don't overthink where they get their hair cut. They go where it's close, quick and decent. That works until the cut stops suiting you, or the grey starts coming through, and then it's worth knowing what the options actually are.

Barber or salon: what's the difference?

A good barber is hard to beat for a sharp clipper cut on a lunch break. Barbershops are usually walk-in friendly and quick, and fades are their bread and butter.

A salon tends to give you more time in the chair: a proper chat about what you want and what your hair will actually do, more scissor work through the top, and colour or grey blending under the same roof. The trade-off is that you usually book ahead.

Some guys use both, a barber for a quick tidy and a salon when they want a change or some colour.

What's the Barber-zone at Crew?

It's a separate room inside Crew Stylists, set up properly for men's cuts and grooming, upstairs at Level 1, 22 The Mall. You get the same stylists and products as the rest of the salon, in a quieter space away from the main floor.

Fades, tapers and scissor cuts

We do everything from a soft taper to a sharp skin fade, classic short back and sides, textured crops, scissor cuts and longer styles. Tell us how high and tight you like it, or bring a reference photo. If you don't have one, we'll guide you based on your hair type and how it grows.

Grey blending and men's colour

A homme toner is a quick, natural blend for grey: $50 and about 15 minutes. It softens grey rather than covering it flat, so there's no hard line when it grows out. Mention it when you book so we allow the time.

Before a wedding, event or job interview

Get the cut about a week before, not the day before. A week lets the edges soften so it looks like your hair, not a fresh clip. If you're in a wedding party, the groom and groomsmen can come back on the morning for a men's blow-dry and styling, which takes about 30 minutes. Bring a photo of the suit or the look if you've got one, and tell us the timings so we can fit everyone in.

Which to choose

If you just want it short and tidy: the clipper or buzz cut, $32, in and out in 15 minutes.

If you're happy with your cut and it's grown out: the cut refresh, $77. Every four to six weeks keeps a fade looking sharp.

If you want something different, or you're not sure what suits you: book the restyle, $107, for the extra time.

If the grey's bothering you: add the homme toner to any cut.

For your bathroom shelf, two ways, choose by budget and what you need. For texture without shine, Kérastase Genesis Homme Cire d'Épaisseur ($57.12) is a thickening wax that suits shorter cuts. For washing, Genesis Bain Hydra-Fortifiant ($57.12) is for hair prone to breakage, and Spécifique Bain Divalent ($57.12) is for oily roots. If you'd rather go sulfate-free, Pureology Pure Volume Shampoo ($58.08) gives fine hair more body.

Frequently asked questions

Do you take walk-ins for men's cuts?

Yes, whenever we have a gap. If you're coming in on spec, call 03 441 8555 first and we'll tell you if a chair's free. Booking online is the surest way to get the time you want, especially on Thursday evenings, which go first.

Do you do skin fades?

Yes, everything from a soft taper to a sharp zero skin fade. Tell us how high and tight you like it, or bring a reference photo. A cut refresh ($77, 45 minutes) covers keeping an existing fade sharp, and a restyle ($107, 1 hour) is the one to book for a new shape.

Can I get a haircut after work in Queenstown?

On Thursdays, yes. We're open until 8pm, which suits people working in town, Frankton or Arrowtown. The other weekdays we close at 5pm, and we're closed on weekends and public holidays. Thursday evenings book out first, so book a few days ahead.

How often should a men's cut be refreshed?

For short cuts and fades, every four to six weeks keeps the shape clean. Longer scissor cuts can usually go six to eight weeks. A cut refresh is $77 and takes about 45 minutes. If you leave it much longer and the shape's gone, you may need the restyle instead.

Can you cover my grey without it looking dyed?

That's what the homme toner is for. It blends grey instead of covering it flat, so it looks natural and grows out without a line. It's $50 and takes about 15 minutes, and you can add it to any cut. Mention it when you book so we allow the time.

Do you cut kids' hair as well?

Yes. Children aged 5 to 12 are $70 and under-fives are $60. Secondary school students can book the high school cut at $70, which takes about 45 minutes. Book online and pick the right service for their age, so we allow the right time.

Is the Barber-zone separate from the main salon?

Yes, it's its own room inside Crew Stylists, set up for men's cuts and grooming. You come up the same stairs at Level 1, 22 The Mall, and you're looked after by the same team. See our men's page for the full menu.
