Questions we get asked +
How often should I use a hair mask?
For most hair, once or twice a week in place of your conditioner. Shampoo, squeeze out the water, work the mask through mid-lengths and ends, leave it a few minutes, then rinse. Very dry or bleached hair can take it every wash. Fine hair usually does better with once a week, or a quick one like the Redken Color Extend 1 Minute Mask.
Which hair mask is best for colour-treated hair?
Kérastase Chroma Absolu Masque Chroma Filler and L'Oréal Vitamino Color Masque are the two we use most on coloured hair. Gloss Absolu Masque is the pick when shine is the main complaint. For blondes, Blond Absolu Masque Ultra Violet tones brass while it conditions, so use it every second or third wash. See our hair mask guide for more.
What is a filler hair mask?
Filler is Kérastase's name for masks designed to fill in the damaged, porous spots along the hair so it feels smoother and more even. You'll see it in the Première Masque Filler Réparateur, aimed at damaged hair, and Chroma Absolu Masque Chroma Filler for coloured hair. Our Première explainer covers how that range works.
Which mask is best for very damaged or bleached hair?
Absolut Repair Molecular Mask is built for heavily lightened hair. Kérastase Genesis Masque Reconstituant suits weakened hair prone to snapping, and the Première mask is for damage plus that dull, rough feel. Blond Absolu Masque Extreme sits in the blonde range. If the hair is gummy or breaking off, come in. A bond treatment in salon will do more than any mask at home.
Do I still need conditioner if I use a mask?
On mask days, no. The mask replaces conditioner for that wash. On the other days, conditioner does the everyday work of detangling and smoothing the cuticle, and the mask is the deeper top-up. A leave-in or oil after either is fine. Just keep it light on fine hair so the ends don't flop.
How do the scalp masks work?
They go on the scalp, not the lengths. L'Oréal Scalp Advanced Anti-Oiliness Clay Mask is for roots that get greasy fast and is used before or as part of your wash. The Anti-Discomfort Treatment is for a scalp that feels tight or irritated. If itching, flaking or redness won't settle, see a GP or dermatologist. More in our scalp care range.
