How to Keep Your Blonde Bright Between Salon Visits
Brassy blonde between appointments? Here's how our Queenstown colourists keep blonde hair cool, bright and healthy at home.
You've invested in a beautiful blonde — here's how to protect it between appointments so it stays cool, bright and glossy rather than dull or brassy.
Why blonde turns brassy
As blonde hair is exposed to water minerals, sun, heat styling and washing, the cool tones fade and warm yellow or orange undertones start to show. This is completely normal — the goal is to slow it down and neutralise it.
Use a purple shampoo (correctly)
Purple shampoo deposits violet pigment that cancels yellow tones. Use it once or twice a week — not every wash — and leave it on for 2–3 minutes. Overusing it can leave a dull violet cast, so balance it with your regular hydrating shampoo.
Book a toner refresh
A toner or gloss between full colour appointments is the single best way to refresh your blonde. It takes 30–45 minutes and instantly brings back that cool, expensive-looking finish.
Protect against heat and sun
- Always use a heat protectant before straightening or curling.
- Central Otago sun is harsh — wear a hat or use a UV-protective spray in summer.
- Lower your styling-tool temperature; lightened hair is more fragile.
Feed the moisture
Blonde and lightened hair is more porous, so it loses moisture faster. A weekly mask and a bond-building treatment keep it strong and shiny. Ask your stylist which range suits your hair.
