How Often Should You Get Your Hair Coloured?

Foils, balayage, global colour or root touch-ups — here's how often each one really needs doing, from our Queenstown colour team.

One of the most common questions we get is "how often should I be coming in?" The honest answer depends on your service, your natural base and how you like to wear it. Here's a realistic guide.

Root touch-ups & global colour

If you cover greys or maintain an all-over colour, every 4–6 weeks keeps your regrowth tidy. Stretching beyond that is fine for a more lived-in look — just expect a more visible line.

Foils

A full head of foils is bright and uniform, so regrowth shows sooner — most clients rebook every 6–8 weeks, or do a half-head in between.

Balayage

Because balayage is designed to grow out softly, it's the lowest-maintenance option — every 3–4 months, often with a toner refresh in between.

Toners & glosses

  • Toners fade faster than lightening — a refresh every 4–6 weeks keeps blondes cool.
  • A gloss adds shine and can be added to any appointment.

Protecting your hair between visits

Whatever your schedule, the right home care makes your colour last longer and keeps your hair healthy enough to keep colouring. Our team will tailor a simple routine and recommend the products that suit your hair.
