Kérastase vs Pureology: Which Is Right for You? (An NZ Salon Verdict)
Two salon heavyweights, two very different philosophies. Our colourists use both on real clients, so here's the honest call on which one belongs in your bathroom.
If you've stood in front of a salon shelf trying to choose between Kérastase and Pureology, you're not alone. They're two of the most asked-about brands we stock, and the honest answer to "which is better" is that it depends entirely on your hair and what you actually want from it. We use both on clients every week at Crew, so rather than give you a marketing brochure, here's how we'd talk you through Kérastase vs Pureology if you were sitting in our chair in New Zealand.
Both are professional, salon-only ranges. Both are genuinely good. They just come at hair from different angles, and once you understand that difference, the choice usually makes itself.
The quick version: what each brand is really about
Kérastase is the French luxury house owned by L'Oréal. It's built around precision and ritual, with a huge spread of ranges, each one engineered for a very specific concern: bleached blonde, deep colour, fine hair, curls, damage, scalp, ageing hair, and so on. You don't buy "Kérastase shampoo" so much as you buy the right Kérastase line for your exact hair. The textures feel rich, the fragrances are gorgeous, and the results lean towards salon-finish smoothness and shine.
Pureology is the American colour-care specialist. Everything it makes is 100% vegan, sulphate-free, and built first and foremost to protect colour and keep it from fading. The hero detail is its concentrated, low-lather formulas, so a little goes a long way, and its signature scent (that herbal, slightly minty blend) is instantly recognisable. If colour longevity is your number-one priority, Pureology was practically designed for you.
So the short version: Kérastase gives you a tailored range for almost any concern; Pureology gives you focused, clean, colour-first care. Browse the full Kérastase range and the Pureology range if you want to see what we mean.
Which one suits your hair?
This is the part that actually matters. Here's how we'd point you, based on what we see most.
You colour your hair (especially vibrant or fashion shades)
Pureology is the natural first pick here. The sulphate-free formulas are gentle on the cuticle, so your colour holds its tone for longer between appointments, which matters a lot if you've invested in a salon colour. If your hair is also colour-treated and prone to dullness, this is exactly the lane Pureology lives in.
That said, Kérastase has a brilliant answer too. Chroma Absolu is its dedicated colour range, with a lovely glossy finish, and Gloss Absolu is fantastic if shine is what you're chasing. If you want colour protection but you also love a more indulgent, fragranced experience, Kérastase wins on feel.
You're blonde or have highlights
For blondes, Kérastase's Blond Absolu is one of the most popular ranges we sell. The Cicaextreme mask is a genuine client favourite for softening that dry, straw-like feel bleach can leave behind, and the range includes purple-toning options to keep brassiness at bay. If you're blonde or highlighted, this is where we'd start you.
Pureology still works beautifully for blondes, particularly if your main worry is fade and brightness rather than the dryness that comes with lightening. Plenty of our blonde clients run Pureology day to day and reach for a Kérastase mask once a week. Mixing brands like this is completely fine, and often the smartest approach.
Your hair is dry, damaged or over-processed
If years of colour, heat or bleach have left your hair feeling fried, Kérastase has the broader rescue toolkit. Nutritive handles everyday dryness, Résistance is built for weakened, damaged lengths, and the Elixir Ultime oil is the one we reach for to add slip and shine on coarse or unruly hair. For seriously damaged or broken hair, the depth of the Kérastase range is hard to beat.
Pureology's Hydrate and Strength Cure lines are still excellent for moisture and resilience, and the clean formulations are a real plus if your scalp or skin reacts to sulphates. But if you want the widest choice of targeted repair, Kérastase edges it.
Your hair is fine or feels flat
Fine hair does well on lighter formulas, and this is one area where Pureology's concentrated, low-lather approach shines, because it cleans thoroughly without weighing hair down. Kérastase's answer is Genesis for hair that feels weak and sheds, or Densifique for a fuller, denser feel. If you're chasing volume on fine hair, either brand can deliver, so it often comes down to which texture and scent you prefer.
The honest pros and cons
Nothing is perfect, and we'd rather you hear the trade-offs from us than discover them at home.
Kérastase, the upside: unmatched range for targeting specific concerns, luxurious textures, beautiful fragrances, and that proper salon finish. The downside: it sits at a higher price point, the fragrances are stronger (worth knowing if you're sensitive), and the sheer number of ranges can be overwhelming without someone to guide you.
Pureology, the upside: outstanding colour protection, vegan and sulphate-free across the board, concentrated formulas that last ages, and a scent people genuinely love. The downside: the low-lather feel takes some getting used to if you're used to a big foam, the range is narrower, and that signature fragrance isn't for everyone.
So, which should you buy?
If we had to boil it down: choose Pureology if colour longevity, a clean vegan formula, and value-for-money concentration are your priorities. Choose Kérastase if you want a product matched precisely to your hair's quirks, you love a luxe ritual, and finish and shine matter most to you.
And honestly? The clients with the best hair at home often run both. Pureology as the daily shampoo and conditioner, with a Kérastase mask or oil layered in once or twice a week as the treat. There's no rule that says you have to pick a side. If you'd rather not commit to a full range yet, our masks and treatments and hair oils are an easy, lower-cost way to test how each brand behaves on your hair.
One thing that does matter, wherever you buy: make sure the products are genuine and in date. Salon haircare bought through unauthorised channels can be old, diverted, or counterfeit, and you won't get the result you paid for. As an authorised stockist of both brands, everything we sell is the real thing, fresh, and exactly what we'd use on you in the salon.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kérastase or Pureology better for coloured hair?
Pureology is built first and foremost around colour protection, with sulphate-free, vegan formulas that help your colour hold its tone for longer, so it's the natural pick if colour longevity is your top priority. Kérastase counters with dedicated colour ranges like Chroma Absolu and Gloss Absolu, which lean more towards a glossy, luxurious finish. If fade is your main worry, start with Pureology; if you want colour care plus a more indulgent feel, Kérastase is excellent too.
Why is Pureology low-lather, and does that mean it cleans less?
Pureology is sulphate-free and concentrated, so it produces less foam than a traditional shampoo. Lather isn't what cleans your hair, surfactants are, so a low-lather wash still cleans thoroughly. It also means a little goes a long way, so the bottle lasts longer than you'd expect. The only catch is it can feel unfamiliar at first if you're used to a big foam.
Can I use Kérastase and Pureology together?
Absolutely, and many of our clients do. A common approach is Pureology shampoo and conditioner for daily colour care, with a Kérastase mask or oil layered in once or twice a week for extra nourishment and shine. There's no need to stay loyal to one brand, mixing lets you get the best of both.
Are your Kérastase and Pureology products genuine, and do you ship around New Zealand?
Yes. Crew is an authorised stockist, so every product is genuine, in date, and the same stock we use on clients in the salon. We ship NZ-wide, with free shipping on orders over $99, so you can get both brands wherever you are in the country.
