What Does L'Oréal Metal Detox Actually Do? (And Who Needs It)
Metal Detox gets recommended a lot, but most people aren't sure what it does or whether they need it. Here's the honest version from the colourists who use...
If you've had your hair coloured in the last couple of years, your stylist has probably mentioned Metal Detox at least once. It's one of those ranges that gets talked about a lot, but the explanation usually stops at "it protects your colour" and you're left none the wiser about what it actually does or whether you genuinely need it. So here's the straight version from our side of the chair, because this is a range our colourists reach for on real clients, not just something we read about in a brochure.
So what does Metal Detox actually do?
The short answer is that it deals with the metal particles that build up in your hair without you ever noticing. Here's the longer one. Your tap water carries trace minerals, and copper is the main troublemaker. Over time those particles cling to the inside of the hair fibre. Most of the time they just sit there quietly. The problem starts when you put colour or lightener on top of them.
L'Oréal's research found that copper inside the hair reacts with the chemistry in colour and bleach. That reaction causes tiny breakages from the inside out, and it's a big reason colour can come out patchy, why blondes go brassy or unexpectedly khaki, and why hair can feel rougher after a service than you'd hoped. Metal Detox is built around a molecule called Glicoamine that targets and neutralises that copper before it gets the chance to cause trouble.
In plain terms, it cleans up the canvas. Less metal in the hair means colour develops more evenly, lightening is gentler on the fibre, and your result lasts the way it's meant to. That's the whole idea behind it.
Does NZ water really make a difference?
This is the question we get most, and honestly it varies a lot around the country. Plenty of New Zealand homes are on older copper plumbing, and bore water or tank water in rural areas can carry a higher mineral load than treated town supply. You don't get to choose what's in your pipes, and you can't see copper in the water, so the only real way to know is by how your hair behaves.
If your blonde keeps pulling warm no matter how careful your colourist is, or your colour fades faster than it should, mineral build-up is often part of the story. It's not the only cause, but it's one of the easiest to fix.
Who actually needs it
Metal Detox earns its place for some people and is genuinely optional for others. Here's how we think about it when we're recommending it to clients.
You'll get the most out of it if you:
- Lighten or bleach your hair, especially regular blonde and highlighted clients, where copper reactions show up most
- Colour at home or in-salon and want the result to hold its tone
- Have colour-treated hair that feels drier or more fragile than it used to
- Are on bore, tank or older copper plumbing
- Have hair that's already feeling damaged or broken and you're trying to stop further loss during colour
You probably don't need it if your hair is virgin (never coloured), you're on soft treated water, and your colour and condition are behaving themselves. There's no harm in using it, but we'd rather point you to the range that fixes your actual concern than have you buy something you don't need. If your hair is just thirsty, a hydrating mask will do more for you. If it's coloured but happy, Vitamino Color is the more obvious pick.
The Metal Detox range, and how we use each piece
The range is bigger than most people realise, and you don't need all of it. Here's what each product is for and where it genuinely earns a spot in your routine.
Anti-Metal Cleansing Cream Shampoo
This is the one we recommend first if you're only going to buy a single product. It cleanses and neutralises metal in the same step, and it lathers like a normal shampoo rather than feeling stripping. Swap it in for your regular shampoo and you're already covering most of the benefit.
Anti-Metal Mask
The treatment of the range. It keeps neutralising copper while softening and strengthening the fibre, so it sits comfortably alongside the rest of your masks and treatments. Once or twice a week is plenty. If your hair is feeling rough after lightening, this is where you'll notice the difference fastest.
Leave-In Cream
A lightweight leave-in that carries the protection through to your styling and gives you a bit of detangling and heat defence on the way. Good for daily use, especially through the mid-lengths and ends.
Anti-Deposit Protector Oil
The finishing piece. It seals everything in, tames frizz and adds the kind of shine that makes coloured hair look freshly done. It sits nicely with the rest of our hair oils and a little goes a long way, so don't overdo it.
Pre-Shampoo Concentrate
This is the professional step you'll usually meet in the salon rather than at home. We use it before a colour or lightening service to strip out metal first, so the chemistry behaves and your result is cleaner from the start. It's not a daily product, but it's a big part of why we trust the range.
How to build it into your routine without overcomplicating it
You don't need the whole shelf. For most coloured or blonde clients, the cleansing shampoo plus the mask covers the job beautifully. If you want the full experience, add the leave-in for daily protection and the oil for finish. Use it consistently for a few weeks rather than expecting an overnight miracle, because the point is to keep metal from building back up rather than to deliver one dramatic wash.
A small honest note: Metal Detox is a corrective and protective range, not a deep moisture range. If your main problem is dryness rather than colour fading or build-up, you'll get more out of a richer hydrating line. We'd happily steer you toward our L'Oréal Professionnel options for repair and moisture and keep Metal Detox for what it's best at.
Is it worth it?
If you colour your hair and you've ever been frustrated by brassiness, fade, or that rough post-colour feel, yes. It's one of the few products where you can actually see the result hold over time, which is why it's become a quiet staple in the salon. If you don't colour and your hair is healthy, it's a nice-to-have rather than a need.
Either way, you're buying genuine, in-date product when you shop with us. We're an authorised L'Oréal Professionnel stockist, so what lands on your doorstep is exactly what we'd put on a client in the chair.

Frequently asked questions
What does L'Oréal Metal Detox actually do?
It removes and neutralises copper and other metal particles that build up in your hair from tap water. Those metals react with colour and bleach and cause breakage, brassiness and faster fade, so clearing them out helps colour develop evenly, last longer and feel healthier.
Do I need Metal Detox if I don't colour my hair?
Probably not as a priority. The range shines for coloured, bleached and blonde hair where metal reactions cause the most damage. If your hair is virgin and healthy, a hydrating mask or your usual care will do more. There's no harm in using it, but it isn't essential.
Which Metal Detox product should I buy first?
Start with the Anti-Metal Cleansing Cream Shampoo. It cleanses and neutralises metal in one step and replaces your normal shampoo, so it covers most of the benefit on its own. Add the Anti-Metal Mask once or twice a week if your hair feels rough after colour.
Does Metal Detox work with hard or bore water in NZ?
Yes, that's exactly the situation it's designed for. Bore, tank and older copper-plumbing supplies carry more mineral load, which is what builds up in the hair. If your blonde keeps pulling warm or your colour fades fast, mineral build-up is often part of the cause and Metal Detox helps manage it.
