Wedding Hair in Queenstown for the Bridal Party and Guests
Planning your wedding hair in Queenstown? Here's how to plan trials, timing and styling for your big day with Crew Stylists.
Queenstown is one of New Zealand's favourite places to get married, which means a lot of mornings where five or six people need their hair done before a car arrives. This guide is for that side of the day: bridesmaids, mums, flower girls, groomsmen and guests. If you're the bride and want the full plan for your own hair, from the trial to the weather, read our complete Queenstown wedding hair guide.
Short answer: Book the whole bridal party in one go, as early as you can, and allow roughly 45 to 60 minutes per person. Bridesmaids, mums and guests book special occasion hair at $125, a braid at $80 or a wash and blow-dry from $63. Send us the list of names and finish time and we'll build the running sheet. Book online or call 03 441 8555.

How do you book hair for a whole bridal party?
Pick one person to organise it, usually the bride or the maid of honour, and get in touch with the full list before anyone books separately. We need three things:
- How many people, and roughly what each wants (up, half-up, down, braid, just a blow-dry).
- The time everyone needs to be finished and dressed.
- Whether anyone has extensions, very long or very thick hair, which takes longer.
Weekends in the warmer months fill quickly, often months ahead, so book the morning as soon as your date is set. You can add or drop a person later. It's much harder to find extra chairs on a Saturday in February than it is to give one back.
How long does bridal party hair take?
Allow roughly 45 to 60 minutes per person for a styled look. A blow-dry or simple braid is quicker. Long, thick hair and detailed updos take longer. We plan the bride last, or close to last, so her style is freshest for the ceremony and photos.
Here's what a running sheet might look like for a 2pm ceremony with four people. Your real one will depend on how many stylists are working and what each person wants.
| Time | Who |
|---|---|
| 8:30am | Mother of the bride |
| 9:30am | Bridesmaid 1 |
| 10:30am | Bridesmaid 2 |
| 11:30am | Bride |
| 12:30pm | Finished, back to get dressed, photos from 1pm |
Build in a buffer. Someone will always be running ten minutes late, and it's better to be sitting around with a coffee than rushing into the car.
What should everyone bring on the morning?
- Clean, dry hair, washed the night before unless we've told you otherwise.
- A button-up or zip-front top so you can change without pulling anything over your head.
- Any clips, flowers, combs or accessories you're wearing.
- A photo of the style you want on your phone.
- Breakfast before you arrive, and a water bottle. It's a long morning.
Leave heavy oils and dry shampoo off the night before. They make hair slippery and harder to pin.
Do bridesmaids need a hair trial?
Usually not. The bride's trial is where we work out the overall look, and we can talk through each bridesmaid's style there with photos. If a bridesmaid has a specific updo in mind, very fine hair, or wants to test extensions, a separate booking before the day is worth it. Book them as special occasion hair.
Hair for mums, family and guests
You don't need to be in the wedding party to get your hair done for it. Plenty of mothers of the bride and groom, grandmothers and guests book in the morning or the day before.
A smooth blow-dry suits most people and lasts well. Special occasion hair is the one to book for an updo, a half-up style or set curls. If you just want curls through a blow-dry, add a tong or curl after the blow-dry for $26.
For groomsmen and dads, a men's blow-dry and styling is $50. If anyone needs a cut, book it about a week before so it doesn't look freshly clipped in photos. Our men's team can sort that.

Frequently asked questions
Should I wear my hair up or down for an outdoor Queenstown wedding?
Think about the wind and how long you'll be outside. Loose waves look lovely but can get blown about at lakeside or mountain venues. Half-up and soft low buns hold up better and still have movement. Bring your venue and timings to the trial and we'll suggest what will last from the ceremony to the evening.
What should I wear to my hair appointment on the wedding morning?
A button-up or zip-front top, so you can change into your dress without pulling anything over your head. Come with clean, dry hair unless we've asked otherwise, and bring your veil, clips or flowers. Have breakfast first. It's a long morning and you'll want the energy later.
How should I look after my hair in the weeks before the wedding?
Keep it simple. A weekly mask, a trim about four to six weeks out to tidy the ends, and no drastic changes. If you want a treatment for shine, book it with your colour one to two weeks before. Our treatments work well alongside a colour appointment.
Can my bridesmaids all have different hairstyles?
Absolutely. Plenty of bridal parties go for a mix that suits each person's hair length and dress, with a common detail like a side part or the same accessory to tie it together. Send us photos before the day so we can plan the timing for each style. See our bridal packages for the options.
How do I keep my style looking good through the reception?
We pin and set it to last, so mostly it's about leaving it alone. Ask us for a few spare pins and a small hairspray for your bag, or hand them to a bridesmaid. If a curl drops, twist it round your finger and pin it rather than brushing it out.
How early should the bridal party arrive for hair on the wedding morning?
Work back from when everyone needs to be dressed. Allow 45 to 60 minutes per person, add a buffer of half an hour, and the first person usually starts three to five hours before the ceremony depending on the size of the party. Send us your numbers and we'll set the times so nobody is rushed.
Can wedding guests book hair with you on the morning of a wedding?
Yes. Guests, mums and grandmothers often book a blow-dry or special occasion hair the morning of, or the day before. Saturdays in summer fill early, so book as soon as you know you're going. Tell us when you need to leave and we'll fit you around any bridal party bookings.
